The 722 convection vaporiser from Utillian made a very good impression in our test. The device is ideal for vaping herbs. The herbs are not burnt like tobacco in a cigarette, but instead hot air flows through them, extracting the ingredients. With the Utillian convection vaporiser, the desired temperatures can be set precisely and easily. This makes it possible to fully enjoy the herbs. The scope of the set, the ease of use and the ease of cleaning also stand out positively. However, more temperature setting options, especially in the low range, would have been desirable.

The convection vaporiser 722 from Utillian arrived in a typical shipping box. The box contained the convection vaporiser in its product packaging. Although the shipping carton is significantly larger than the product packaging, the product packaging was not secured against slipping. The enclosed foam padding plate was not sufficient for this purpose. Nevertheless, the convection vaporiser and the associated product packaging were in perfect condition.
Damaged packaging would also have been a great pity, as the product packaging is compact and nice to look at. The size and design are reminiscent of the packaging of high-quality smartphones. Accordingly, it is also suitable for giving as a gift.
The product packaging was shrink-wrapped in transparent plastic film. Although this protects against dust and scratches, it would not have been necessary due to the shipping box. When the lid is lifted off after removing the film, the convection vaporiser is revealed, framed in a protective foam cover with a matching cut-out. Underneath is an intermediate layer of cardboard that covers the accessories and operating instructions.
Although the use of foam padding and plastic film is not in the interests of sustainability, the product packaging is ideal for storing the convection vaporiser permanently. The packaging can be opened and closed non-destructively and offers good protection against dust and damage.

Most people’s first impression after unpacking is immediately memorable. Are the contents of the pack complete and does the manufacturer make it as easy as possible for me to use the product straight away?

In addition to the convection vaporiser, the product packaging also contains instructions for use, a charging cable, a filling tool, a cleaning brush, three small O-rings, three large O-rings and three strainers. A power supply unit is not included, but it can be assumed that every household has a standard 5 V power supply unit with USB-A output. The necessary accessories for using the convection vaporiser are therefore available. Thanks to the many layers of packaging, all parts are tidy and more than adequately protected.
The instruction manual is written in English, German, French and Spanish and is very comprehensive. It contains a list of the scope of delivery, safety instructions and warnings, an explanation of how it works, an overview of suitable herbs with the corresponding recommendation for the temperature setting, and a detailed and comprehensible explanation of how to use it, including preparation and cleaning. The comprehensive instructions also enable first-time users to use the appliance correctly and as intended. Finally, the instructions for use also contain information on disposal, which is also necessary due to the integrated rechargeable battery. Particularly commendable is a table with a list of possible malfunctions and associated recommendations for action. This shows that the manufacturer has given extensive thought to its product and its use by customers.

Before we start the practical test, we take a close look at the product processing. How high quality are the materials used? Is the look and feel satisfactory?

The convection vaporiser is 110 mm high, 55 mm wide and 28 mm deep, making it roughly the size of a medium-sized power bank or a classic e-shisha. The black soft-touch surface feels soft and smooth in the hand. In combination with the ergonomic shape, the convection vaporiser is very comfortable to hold and also looks very appealing.
The intake nozzle for the vaporiser and the charging socket are located on the underside. Charging takes place via a micro USB connection. Although the appropriate cable for the outdated connection is available, compatibility with today’s smartphone charging cables would have been desirable with a USB-C charging socket. The button for operating the convection vaporiser is located on the side of the device and can be easily reached with the index finger, regardless of which hand is holding it. The mouthpiece is located on the top. This can be rotated 360° and can be swivelled to the side, forwards and backwards. This makes the convection vaporiser equally suitable for both right-handed and left-handed users.
The top part of the convection vaporiser, the magnetic cap on which the mouthpiece is attached, can be removed. It is attached with a strong magnet that holds the convection vaporiser firmly together and at the same time makes it easy to open and close the top piece. Opening it gives access to the heating chamber. The heating chamber has a diameter of 13 mm and is just as deep. It is also made entirely of metal. The screen is located between the heating chamber and the mouthpiece and is held in place by an O-ring on the magnetic cap.
Overall, the convection vaporiser from Utillian makes a very good impression. The product looks good, is well made and very stable. Compared to conventional methods of smoking herbs, there is less waste, as the material consumption is limited to the herbs themselves. In return, however, a battery and electronics are required, which have to be produced and disposed of properly at the end of the product life cycle. The good product quality promises a long service life.

Does the manufacturer keep its advertising promises?
Our practical test is the most relevant and therefore the most important. Here, the product has to undergo a wide range of criteria and tests. We check the functions and product promises of the test article.

For our practical test, we obtained two different herbs: peppermint and sage. First, the convection vaporiser is filled with peppermint. There is a small, slightly funnel-shaped recess around the opening of the heating chamber between the magnetic cap and the convection vaporiser. This proves to be very advantageous here, as fine herbs are much easier to fill . After filling, the magnetic cap is closed again and you can get started straight away.
The Utillian convection vaporiser has a total of four different temperature settings of 180 °C, 190 °C, 200 °C and 210 °C. The device also has a boost mode with 225 °C. However, the operating instructions recommend a temperature of 160 °C for peppermint. As this cannot be set, we tried the lowest setting, 180 °C, in our test. This can be easily set using the control knob and is signalled by a green LED light next to the mouthpiece. The flavour of peppermint can be detected after a very short time. The refreshing feeling in the mouth while smoking is comparable to that of mentholated toothpaste. The mint flavour is accompanied by a smoky note, which is less reminiscent of cigarettes and more of a fire. The air drawn in is relatively cold and the sensation in the throat is pleasant, so that even non-smokers can inhale without any problems.
However, there is no visible vapour development. Increasing the temperature and using the boost mode does not produce any visible vapour either, but does ensure that the mint flavour disappears.
Next we try sage. To do this, remove the magnetic cap and empty the heating chamber. Turning the appliance upside down is enough for the peppermint to fall out of the heating chamber without leaving any residue. The sage can now be poured in. The recommended temperature of 190 °C can be set with sage, the LED now lights up blue. Here too, the flavour of sage can be detected after a short time, but again mixed with a hint of open fire. Compared to peppermint, however, the sage flavour is less intense and there is no refreshing sensation in the mouth. Instead, there is a visible, albeit weak vapour development. However, the vapour is noticeably hotter than before with peppermint, and a gentle scratching sensation in the throat is also noticeable. As with peppermint, cleaning with sage is also very easy. As before, no residue remains in the heating chamber after turning over.
The convection vaporiser is the wrong product for anyone looking for a particularly intense and sweet taste experience or who wants to blow plumes of smoke into the wind. However, for someone who wants to vape herbs consciously, it can be fully recommended. The different temperature settings make it easy to set the desired temperature. Filling, cleaning and general operation are also very simple and convenient.
